Matter can change from one phase to another. For example, water can change from a solid to a liquid. a change in matter from one phase to another is called a phase change. There are 4 main kinds of phase changes. During a phase change, there is a change in heat energy. A substance either gains or loses heat as it changes from one phase to another.
